Heritage of Herrera Canyon

Explore the deep New Mexico history, Sacramento Mountain topography, and early pioneer bonds of the Herrera preserve.

Our History

A Living Sanctuary in the High Desert

At Herrera Canyon Ranch, our name honors the widowed Mrs. Herrera, who preserved these high-desert canyon boundaries long before the land was purchased by renowned Southwest painter Peter Hurd in May 1934. Nestled right in the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains, this terrain was frequented by Billy the Kid and the Regulators during the 1878 Lincoln County War, using the steep ravines and Whiskey Trail ridge spotters to outmaneuver pursuers. The ranch remains committed to private family stewardship, protecting the natural cottonwood meadows fed by the historic Herrera Ditch, and supporting the wild horses, bears, mountain lions, and native big-game that run through our rugged drawers.

We are dedicated to preserving this legendary estate, keeping the stories of José Herrera, Billy the Kid's trail, and the Hurd art collections active and accessible to historians, trekkers, and art lovers alike.
